This was my first shot at these iced sugar cookies. I used the instructions in this post from bee in our bonnet.

The cookies are DELICIOUS! I liked everything about the texture and taste. As you can see from the picture, I didn't do the best job in the world with the icing. I think I had it too thick, but... they were insanely delicious, which I rarely say about an iced sugar cookie. Usually they taste like play-doh.
I made 2 dozen of them, which sold for $48 at the church's Young Women's auction. Wahoo! I will be making these again soon for K's Groovy Disco Party.

Crafted Canopy

Couldn't figure out where to buy one, so we made one! I *heart* this fabric. So 70s!

Just purchased the fabric, and serged it to the old canopy (that had some holes and was getting threadbare in spots). Now it is double-thick and hopefully more rain resistant!

Stashbustin' Summer Satchel

Here is my first project from my envelope from Dollar Store Crafts' Stashbusting Mystery Project !!! I actually love it.

I would have done a tutorial for it if I had any idea it would turn out so stinking cute!

I used the flour sack towel, doubled, to make the satchel. Then I used the pom pom thread and couch stitched it onto the front, and tacked the crocheted flowers to it.

I wish I had lined it, and may go back and line it with a little nylon I have on hand.

I did not use the zipper as I had originally intended for two reasons - 1) I wanted the ease of accessibility and 2) once the towel shrunk with washing, the zipper was WAY too long.

Crafting Experiment!

Heather over at DollarStoreCrafts.com is hosting a groovy random crafting experience and I was chosen as a participant.

I would like to say I was chosen because I am such an awesome blogger, but the truth is, I'm a pretty sucky blogger.

I do love crafting, though!

I am a better crafter (sometimes) than a blogger.

I was *SOOO* excited when I got the envelope! I couldn't believe I was chosen!

When I opened it, I would have never imagined how much stuff could fit in that little envelope!

I was excited at some of the materials I would get to work with. There was a flour sack towel, which I have crafted with before. Also there was a headband and a little bucket!
I immediately started brainstorming on what to make with that little bucket...
I thought... and I thought... and I thought.
Couldn't come up with anything, so I chose some items to use on my first craft from Heather's stockpile...

The flour sack, some weird yarny stuff, two little crocheted thingies, and a zipper.

Any guesses? Anyone?? No? Fabulous. It will be a big surprise.

Still was thinking about the bucket.

Still came up with nothing.

So I picked out some items for a second craft.

A lingerie sack, some buttons, a ribbon, a piece of fabric, and a headband.

This one may be easier for you to figure out.

No? Lingerie sack & headband not going together? Hmmm, maybe you're right...

Now for the bucket....

Here are the items for my third craft...

Two metallic papers, a plaid paper, a Pooh postcard, and a heart wooden plaque.

Is that how you spell plaque?

And where is the bucket?

It is in the stack of "what to do with this stuff?" The bucket, a skull, a bib, two zippers, a stack of white cards, a pom pom, some stickers, and a "WOODEN TYPE SHEET."

My goal is to bust this entire stash, so who knows what this stuff will end up being....

I don't like curtains. I don't like valances. I don't like anything like that. Just not my taste. However, sometimes they are necessary. Like when you move into a house that has two and three rods/hardware already installed PER window...

So when we moved into this house 2 1/2 yrs ago, I needed a quickie solution. My quickie solution worked, and I actually love the results. Only once have I been asked if they were placemats, and that was only recently.

Easy peasy. Placemats. Hot glue. Curtain rod.

My First Refashioned Shirt

I wore this shirt twice before I refashioned it. I hated it. I wish I had some before pix. What I didn't like about this shirt was 1) it had ribbed cuffs on the bottom of the sleeves and 2) it had a row of buttons going down the front.

I didn't do a tutorial since this was my first attempt and I really thought I might botch it up.

I must say I *LOVE* the shirt now. In fact, I wore it the same day I refashioned it.I cut the sleeves off and hemmed them to be elbow length. That is my fave length, even in the winter.

Then I popped off the buttons and sewed two rows of ruffles down the front. Sooooo easy.

You don't have to finish the ends since it is knit - it will not fray.

I tried to get the sleeve and the ruffles in all the pix.
I have another shirt that I have a love/hate relationship with that I will be fixing this week.

I like the way it fits and the length of the shirt.

I don't like the cut at the neck - it is square neck which is my fave, but it is cut down just a little too far and always shows a bit of bra/undershirt...

I also don't like the elastic bands on the ends of the sleeves.

My next post will FIX IT!

How to Carve ANYTHING into a Pumpkin

I got NO pix for this tutorial. It's just that simple. If you are an expert pumpkin carver, hit the scroll button! You have NO USE for me!

1. find an image that you like. make sure that it doesn't have a bunch of floaty things in the image. if it does, you can improvise by creative carving or toothpicks.

2. cut a rough circle around your image.

3. cut a top off your pumpkin. make one side pointy so you can line it up, and make the rest of it kind of circular.

4. hollow (holler for all my kinfolk) out the pumpkin, and scrape the pumpkin meat out to make it about 1/2 - 3/4" thick. this is the trickiest part.

5. cut darts into your image to make it lie against a pumpkin. tape it to your pumpkin.

6. use an awl or a toothpick or a skewer or an old pen or something to poke holes all around the outline of the image. they should be pretty close together so that you can vaguely "see" the image when you untape the image.

7. untape the image.

8. using a pumpkin saw or a serrated knife, saw up and down using your little holes as a guide. periodically cut through and pop some of the pieces that you don't need out. it makes you feel like you are making progress.

9. once your image is just like you want it, stick a candle in the pumpkin. light it. put the lid on.

10. take a picture.

11. after about 10 minutes, pull the lid off and see where the burn mark is from your candle. cut a chimney hole there. if you want. if not, it really doesn't matter unless you don't like the smell.

12. done. happy pumpkin carving.

Bead Canisters

These are our new little "bead" jars. They house our beads that we use to "buy" back the things that we leave lying around the house.

See this post for full details of "why." This post is about the canisters!

To make the cute Mod Podged canisters, I cut Crystal Light® canisters into graduated sizes. I then used some awesome Amy Butler paper to cover them and cut circles out of coordinating solid sticker paper for the tops. I made the name signs and slathered Mod Podge (3 coats) all over the place and Voila! Bead canisters for the family, and they're not an eyesore like the jelly jars I was going to use originally. These canisters are soooo cute. And if they are tacky with the names on there and company is coming, I plan on just turning them around and no one will be the wiser! They will just think I have quirky little seventies do dahs all over the place. Oh wait, they already think that....

But now I'm thinking that if I did this to my regular canisters, I might could pull them from the pantry and actually display them... hmmm..... O! The possibilities...

Fabric

These are the focus fabrics for my next quilt.

They are soft flannels and are going to be a baby quilt for my cousin's baby.

The baby will probably either be graduating high-school or getting married by the time I get it done.

Trip to the Consignment Shop

So when I went to the consignment shop, I noticed that they did not take back any of the corduroy that I had. What? I *heart* cords!

So I'm thinking I will scrap it all and make some sort of quilt squares with the bits that I have. I have several different colors of garments and am thinking of doing 3x3 patches and sewing them into 9 patch squares. We shall see. I will start cutting soon.

ALSO they did not take back a lot of little blanket sleepers, and they are stinking cute! So I have no idea what kind of stuff I can make with them, but I am about to find out! I'll keep you posted.

I am still working on a second jean quilt (for K), but I'm in a holding pattern because I have company this week! I will be right back on it soon!

Jean Quilt

This was the easiest thing in the world.

Cut your old jean pieces into 6x6' squares.

Sew them, wrong sides together, into strips (I used 12 squares per strip).

Sew the strips together (I used 12 strips for a total of 144 squares).

Since this was heavy enough, and there are no seams inside, I didn't need to use batting.

Put the backing on, leaving a 5/8' seam allowance. Roll that over and stitch the binding down. Tie it with coordinating embroidery floss (I used red, dark blue, and light blue). Wash it & trim down some of the denim raveling, and voila!

When you take pictures of yours, try not to get the Sunday paper in the pic ;)"
